It is important to note the process of administering the BSFA Awards is run by volunteers and is motivated by a desire to celebrate the amazing creativity of individuals who impress the BSFA’s members. The process works as follows:
Stage 1:
Any BSFA Member may nominate for the BSFA long list. This closes at the end of the nominating year. The form for nomination is sent out to all members through the newsletter. BSFA Members may not vote for their own works, or works they are named as being part of producing.
A suggestion document is published with the nomination form in the newsletter. This list can be edited. It is checked regularly by the BSFA Team. It is not a nomination list.
The BSFA team, led by the Awards Administrator, goes through the nominations and removes any that are not eligible.
Stage 2:
The long list is published, with as much connection to the nominated works as possible – in that we look for every work that has been accepted to be eligible and attempt to link to it so BSFA members can explore as many of these works as possible.
The voting period opens. BSFA Members are given access to a voting form and may choose works from the long list to vote for. Again, they may not vote for their own works or works they are named as being part of producing.
Stage 3:
The shortlist is published. The voting period opens. BSFA Members are given access to a voting form and may choose works from the short list to vote for. Again, they may not vote for their own works or works they are named as being part of producing. Eastercon attendees are also given the opportunity to vote.
Stage 4:
The winners are announced.
